He will also back to his dear places in Manhattan.

Japan Society lecture on Mobile and Social Media, "Keitai Kids: Youth, Culture and Social Media in the USA and Japan", 19:00-20:30, Oct 11 NYC. Tomi Ahonen and I will make presentations and discussion moderated by Trebor Scholz. It is a part event of the New School's MobilityShifts conference.

2010年度末をもちまして、KDDI研究所との共同プロジェクトが修了いたしました。東京大学大学院情報学環の水越伸・山内祐平・岡田猛研究室とKDDI研究所は、2008年度に共同研究体制を作り、３年間「テレコミュニケーションの文化とリテラシーに関する質的、デザイン論的実践に関する共同研究」を進めてきました。MoDeは、ケータイを用いた批判的メディア実践の可能性や意義を探る領域メンバーとして参加していました。

共同プロジェクトは、実践的かつデザイン論的研究方法を導入することによって新しいコミュニケーション文化の潜在可能性を明らかにすることを目的にしていました。市民参加型ワークショップやアイデア創発型ワークショップなど様々な実践的研究を通して、技術開発を中心に語られてきたケータイの新しいあり方を浮き彫りにしたことは大きな成果でしょう。とくに、今回の共同プロジェクトでは、学習環境デザイン（山内祐平研究室）、創造的認知（岡田猛研究室）など、異なる専門領域の研究者たちが共同で研究を進めました。学際的かつ多面的な分析を図ったことも意義深い試みだったと思われます。

On the 25th March 2011, Alexandre Fleury, a visiting graduate student from Aalborg University in Denmark, organized a workshop investigating the convergence between television and mobile phone. Twelve participants first explored what makes the two devices important to them by: Pointing at the emotions they would experience without a TV and a mobile phone; associating adjectives to each device; and naming functions they felt was essential for each device.

The participants then generated creative scenarios involving their own experiences from both media. By integrating the functions they identified previously into unusual real life situations, the scenarios illustrated not only what makes the two media so vital to modern life but also how to use them simultaneously.

Furthermore, the participants merged their personal scenarios in groups, creating more elaborated stories involving TV and mobile. The groups then acted out their story, enabling reflection and feedback from all workshop attendees and facilitators.

When asked simply, the most important functions of TV and mobile phone mentioned are unsurprisingly related to accessing information and communicating with peers. However, it is interesting to study how these basic functions gradually evolve when transposed to unusual setups. If some functions keep their original purpose, some become insights of what may be the future of converged media. Finally, it should be noted that during the workshop, all group performances referred to an emergency or tragic situation. This unfortunately illustrates the timing of the workshop, only 2 weeks after the disaster of March 11th.

KDDI研究所と東京大学大学院情報学環の水越伸・山内祐平・岡田猛研究室が共同で進めている「テレコミュニケーションの文化とリテラシーに関する質的、デザイン論的実践に関する研究」の成果報告会が、2011年2月24日、KDDI研究所で開かれました。MoDeでは、水越伸、金ヨニが出席して、これまでの研究成果について発表およびディスカッションを行いました。今回の報告会は一般公開はしませんでしたので、開催報告だけにいたします。

Yonnie Kim, a member of MoDe, held a mobile storytelling workshop in Manila, the Philippines from Feb 7 to Feb 9, 2011. As a collaborative scheme with d'CATCH program, MoDe set a "Mobile Story Collector" booth at its venue in the University of Santo Tomas. In the booth, international participants from the Philippines, Thai and China were invited to join to a storytelling activity on their mobile media experiences. Basically as an extension of the previous action research, the workshop was designed for a cross-cultural performance ethnography on mobile media literacy.

In the first part of the activity, participants were invited to find a unique word to describe their experiences with own mobile phones. Then, they were asked to visualize the word by body expression such as making a face, a gesture or performance. Participants' expressions were taken photos and displayed on iPad photo frame on the spot. Finally, participants made a verbal reflection why they chose the word and matched it with such body expression.

More than 30 young participants joined to the creative activity to present individual experiences with their own mobile media. Meaningful reflections were also made on varying aspects surrounding digital media from their versatility in everyday lives to a self-identical attachment to the mobile phone as a personal belonging.

This workshop program is recommendable as a simple and easy activity on mobile media literacy. It also seems very useful for a cross-cultural approach as it is basically counting on a non-verbal performance, which is a universal communication means in any cultural context.

Kyounghwa Yonnie Kim, a member of MoDe, had a presentation at Contemporary Ethnography Across the Disciplines held in Hamilton, New Zealand on 19 November. The title of presentation was "An "insider's view" in media studies: Case analysis of performance ethnography in mobile media studies" where the methodological achievement of MoDe project was reported as a new interdisciplinary approach in media studies.

[Presentation abstract] One of emerging issues in media studies is how to develop an integral methodology to describe a digital media phenomenon, whereas conventional methods such as a large-scaled survey and statistical analysis encounter difficulties in their attempts to address multiply contexts of the use of digital devices. This paper reflects on performance ethnography as a methodological perspective to investigate digital media, looking specially at the cultural practices of mobile technology. After a brief discussion on recent attempts to introduce new approaches in investigating multimodal and highly personalized mobile media, this paper will present case analysis of performance ethnography workshops conducted in MoDe project. Finally it will suggest an emic framework, that is to say, "insider's view" as a possible new perspective in media studies, thus, to clarify potential contribution of performance ethnographic methods to the study of digital media.

2010年10月23日（土）、文京シビックセンター21階 会議室にて、「ケータイってなんだろう」ワークショップを実施しました。このワークショップは、文京区と東京大学の連携プロジェクト「文の京大なる学び」のシリーズの一環であり、KDDI研究所と情報学環の共同研究チームによって進められたものです。

On Oct 23rd, 「What is Keitai?」 workshop was held at the 21st floor's meeting room of civic center of Bunkyo district office. As a part of a co-project of Bunkyo district and the University of Tokyo, MoDe research team in cooperation with KDDI R&D Labs designed and conducted the workshop.

ワークショップのプログラムは、これまでのケータイものがたりWSをさらに展開させて、ケータイものがたりの前後にミニ講演をはさんで、日々の日常経験からケータイを振り返るだけではなく、その文化と技術の現状をしっかりとらえなそうとしたものでした。ワークショップには文京区の住民の十数名が参加しましたが、情報機器をテーマにしたものの、企画側の予想をはるかに超えて高齢の方々がほとんでしてびっくりでした。

The basic program of the workshop was following Mode's "Keitai storytelling WS", however, we introduced a set of mini lectures before and after the storytelling activity so that participants will be able to reflect mobile phones in both dimension of culture and technology. Dozens of Bunkyo district residents participated in the workshop. To our surprise, the majority of participants was senior citizens in their 70's which was beyond our imagination.

最初に水越伸先生がワークショップの趣旨や問題意識について簡単に説明したうえ、「海外のケータイ事情」（金ヨニ）についてミニ講演１を行いました。その後、参加者は５〜６人でグループとなり、各自のケータイ経験について語りあいました。そして自らの物語りをよくあらわせるケータイのパーツや様子を撮影し、そのことについてみんなで発表を行いました。最後に「ケータイ技術の現状」（新井田統氏）についてミニ講演２を行い、一日のプログラムをまとめました。

Prof. Mizukoshi opened with introduction and explanation of workshop program, then Yonnie Kim made a short lecture on mobile phones in foreign countries. Then participants divided to groups of 5~6 persons, illustrated their own experiences surrounding keitai. Then, they moved to a photo booth and had a single part of their keitai taken a picture, which describes their own story well. Overall presentation was followed. After this activity, Mr. Niida Sumaru made a final lecture on technological issue of mobile phones.

今回のワークショップは、参加者に高齢者が多かったため、ケータイの使いにくさや不便についての物語りが多かったのが特徴的でした。これまでは若者のケータイ使用に焦点を置く場合が多くて、むしろ高齢者のケータイ利用にまつわる経験に聞ける機会は少なかったのではないでしょうか。これからの情報通信社会のあり方についてあらためて考えさせられました。

Because of the demographic of participants, the storytelling remarkably tends to relate to inconvenience of terminal or misunderstanding of its function, etc. Since many activities regarding keitai have focused on youths' usages, media usage of senior people have been rarely addressed so far. In this sense, the workshop was very meaningful in consideration of the future of information society.

Yonnie Kim, a member of Mode, conducted "Performance ethnography of mobile phones in Shanghai" workshop on Sep 24 in Shanghai. Eight Chinese youngsters in their twenties participated in the workshop held in urban area of the city.
The workshop was consist of two parts. The first part of activities was a storytelling about experiences surrounding their own mobile phones, whose detailed program is originally from "My keitai storytelling WS" of Mode. Accordingly, participants in Shanghai asked to choose a single part of their own mobile phones and then had a presentation about their choice.
The second part was "Acting a typical mobile landscape of Shanghai", the cross-cultural revision of "Acting a typical mobile landscape of Seoul" WS in 2009. Participants finally made two short skits about a mobile landscape of Shanghai, where an enthusiasm to savor mobile entertainment was well described.

On July 23rd, MoDe participated in a keitai workshop for kids in Hiroshima, a children's keitai literacy program as part of an educational activities of Children Community net, an NPO in Hiroshima. Yonnie Kim, a member of MoDe participated in the whole process of planning, implementing and facilitating activities, in cooperation with Prof. Yukata Iida of Fukuyama University and Yumiko Takamiya, an activist of Community of the Culture with and for Children in Fukuoka.

In the workshop, kids were divided into groups of 3 or 4 and worked together by groups. After having given a keitai by each groups for their own investigation, kids were assigned to find as many as functions that it has, to draw each of them as a simple illustration on paper cards, then to place cards in a big paperboard. After the activity, a brief presentation time was set to explain what they found about keitai in front of other groups. Then, in the second part of the activities, kids had to think and imagine what functions they wish to have in their own keitai in the future. In the same fashion of the first activity, they expressed what they thought as a simple illustration on paper cards, to place cards in a big paperboard, and finally to explain in front of other groups.

Among children who participated in the workshop, some had their own keitai whereas others had not, however, activities of the workshop were so simple that every children could easily participate. The workshop was successful in a sense that kids can think, find, understand keitai for their own in a voluntary and creative way.

【概要】未来のモバイル・メディア社会のあるべき姿を描くためには、ケータイの技術的な枠組みにとどまらず、ユーザーによって多様に展開されていく社会的、文化的あり方を探る必要がある。今回の研究会では、KDDI研究所と東京大学情報学環が共同で進めている「テレコミュニケーションの文化とリテラシーに関する質的、デザイン論的研究」の成果について報告を行い、文理融合型の最新研究動向を紹介する。報告者として新井田統氏（KDDI研究所）、金ヨニ氏（東京大学学際情報学府）を迎える。新井田氏は、情報通信の専門家とユーザーが共にチームを組んでケータイのサービスをデザインするワークショップを実践しつつ、モバイル技術の未来像を描き出す研究を進めている。金ヨニ氏は、パフォーマンス・エスノグラフィーという文化人類学的研究法を用いてケータイ技術の文化的あり方について提案を行っている。新しい手法を用いた研究成果を検討しながら、モバイル技術の今後のあり方を探るための課題を確かめたい。

【報告者プロフィール】

新井田統（にいだすまる／KDDI研究所ネットワーク設計グループ）
1972年生まれ。1996年，横浜国立大学大学院工学研究科修士課程卒業。同年株式会社KDD（現KDDI株式会社）に入社してKDD研究所配属，携帯電話のデジタル信号処理技術の研究を行う。2006年より心理学・社会学的知見に基づくユーザーセントリックなアプローチによる，コミュニケーションサービスの品質評価手法およびサービス開発手法の研究に取り組む。

金ヨニ（Kyoung-hwa Yonnie KIM／東京大学大学院学際情報学府)
1971年生まれ。韓国ソウル大学人類学科卒業。韓国延世大学校経営大学MBA。韓国日報の取材記者、韓国のポータルサイトの新事業開発担当を経て、 2006年からオーマイニュース日本版の立ち上がりに携わりCOO取締役を勤めた。現在東京大学大学院学際情報学府博士課程に在籍しながら、日本のケータイ文化について研究を進めている。

この間、MoDeのメンバー金ヨニは、「私のOOなケータイ」ワークショップPart I, Part IIを実施しました。都内のある企業のスタッフ8人に参加していただき、ケータイをテーマにして、写真オブジェを作ったり、語り合ったり、体を動かしながら寸劇を演じるなどの活動を行いました。

11月19日に行ったワークショップPart Iでは、「私のケータイものがたり」のミニ・ワークショップのプログラムを一部を応用しました。自分のケータイから大事な部分や自分だけの意味を一つピックアップしてもらい、写真を撮り、「私のOOなケータイ」というフレーズをつけて語るというのが主な活動でした。１ヶ月をあけて12月17日に行ったワークショップのPart IIでは、Part Iで出された「私のOOなケータイ」のテーマに合わせて、新しいケータイをデザインする。そして、新しいケータイの特徴をよく表せる一つの場面を寸劇にして演じるという活動を行いました。

2009年11月27日、東京大学本郷キャンパス福武ホールにて、シンポジウム「ケータイの未来モード：文化と技術の新たな関係性を求めて」を開催しました。　KDDI研究所との共同研究プロジェクトの一環で開かれたシンポジウムには、ケータイの研究者や企業関係者をふくめ、60人以上に参加していただき、日本のケータイの現状や課題について多角度から意見を交わす機会となりました。

シンポジウムではまず、共同研究プロジェクトで行ったワークショップの成果を含めて、技術と文化を結びつける実践研究の意義について報告を行いました。そのあと、大阪大学の平川秀幸さんが登壇して、技術と社会のあり方や関係性という観点から、実践研究のさらなる展開のためにとりくむべき課題を提起してくださいました。続きまして、会場のオーディエンスを交えた参加型パネルディスカッションでは、日本のケータイの現状とも言われている「ガラパゴス化」の言説や技術開発の現場で感じる課題などの問題提起があり、その状況を改善していくために何が必要なのかという点まで議論を深めることができました。（報告：金ヨニ）

■概要
　ケータイというメディアの社会的なありようが引き裂かれています。一方ではこれからの次世代ICT産業を担う旗手として礼賛され、他方では青少年の害悪のように語られる。そしてグローバル化と「ガラパゴス化」のはざまにあって、日本のケータイはさまざまな意味で難局に直面しているといえるでしょう。
　こうした状況のなかで、私たちは、当たり前のようにとらえているケータイとのかかわり方をいったん離れ、新たなケータイのありようを模索してみる必要があるのではないでしょうか。ケータイの専門家だけではなく、ユーザーである市民が参画するかたちで、未来のモバイル・メディア社会をデザインしていくべきではないでしょうか。
　このシンポジウムは、ワークショップを用いた研究教育活動を中心として進められているKDDI研究所と東京大学大学院情報学環の共同研究を踏まえつつ、参加者のみなさんとともにこうした課題について議論を深めていきたいと思います。

Yonnie Kim, a member of MoDe was on the panel in a discussion session about "Mobile media as a lifeline" in TOKYO Medifes 2009 held on Sep 21.

The session was planned to discuss the gender issue of the mobile society, in particular, from the perspectives of the social minorities and the vulnerable. Panelists included the representative of a supporting group of female sexual minorities and a leader of a online community of single parent. It was indicated that the mobile media, especially in Japan from its uniqueness of keitai culture, is working as a very important information channel for the poor and the social vulnerable, and relevant social accounts may be required to taken to.

On Sep 10, we had a session with 19 visiting students from Kansai University. A mini-workshop titled "My keitai story telling" is a program addressing keitai as an object to talk about, not to talk with.

Students are asked to choose a single most impressive objet from their own keitai, to produce it as a piece of digital image, and finally to talk about why they choose it as an objet. The chosen objets varied from a flaw of the keitai body, to an image of standby screen or a copy of text message from a close person. Students told us about the individual experiences about their objet, therefore, came out with the hidden intimate episodes involving keitai.

Activities were very inspiring and easy to implement as well as lots of fun. We would like to develop this activity as an introductory unit of a more comprehensive workshop program of mobile media in the future.

The second presentation session of "A cross-cultural approach to mobile media", a summer-semester class for research students of Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies, took place on July 22. The class was designed to seek an alternative framework to grasp the mobile media as a cultural artifact through cultural comparative approaches.

Following to the first-half activities, students were assigned to make a set of two short skits in relation to the mobile media, but in the different contexts; one presenting Tokyo in 1995 , and the other in 2009. At this time, no guiding frameworks were given. But students knew how to tackle the object, and were confident enough to decide promptly what to investigate. All the groups pointed out a pokebel(pager or beeper) as a representative mobile media in Tokyo in 1995, and tried to translate the contexts of pokebels in the past, forward the current situation of the mobile media phenomenon.

Consequently, two out of three groups presented skits plotted out into the scene of a high school, and the last group presented the scene of a private academy for elementary kids. In their performances, students tried to reveal not only what had changed but also what had not changed in everyday use of mobile media.

On the whole, the repeated implementation of envisioning the media in different cultures or ages seemed to be helpful to induce a reflection on the fundamental layer of mobile culture. It also suggests the possibility of media literacy program utilizing a methodology of performance or performing ethnography.

"A cross-cultural approach to mobile media", a summer-semester class for research students of the Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies, had the first-half presentation session on June 24. This class was designed to seek an alternative framework to grasp the cultural aspects of the mobile media by introducing a cross-cultural approach.

In the first-half of the course, students were required to conduct a group-assignment: to investigate the mobile phone situation of foreign cities such as Seoul, Melbourne, Shanghai and Barcelona. A guiding framework was given to students as an assumption, that is, four dimensions to construct the mobile phone phenomena in a society: policy, technology, industry, and culture. In the presentation session on June 24, each group made a presentation on what they found about the city in general, plus played a short skit in relation to the mobile phone in the public place of that city. This process has been schemed in order to induce learning by performing the imagined images of the mobile phone in different cultures.

In the latter-half of the course, students will explore the same scheme in a different context: to compare the past and the present of mobile media in Tokyo.

This research analyzes the affective use of the mobile phone in Tokyo focusing on family, friends and couples' relationships. The mobile phone is seen as an instrument and media that not only mediates, but also crafts people's relationships and represents an opened door to their affective worlds. The methodological approach in order to conduct this research is the virtual ethnography. The researcher will interview families, friends and couples, will spend time with them (shadowing), and collect their mobile phone messages. Also, videos will be taken in order to examine the ways our body is affected by the mobile phone, and expressions and body language will be examined.

After introducing the main theories on feelings, these will be mingled with media theory to reflect on how our feelings are being mediated by the mobile phone. Tokyo will be examined, as it is the urban setting that represents the context of this research and the place where affective communication happens. Finally, the fieldwork data will be analyzed in detail to explain the mobile phone mediated affective worlds of families, friends and couples in Tokyo.

The workshop of "Acting a typical mobile landscape of Seoul" has been conducted as a cross-cultural approach of performance ethnography on the mobile media, positioning itself as a further tryout of "Acting a typical scene of mobile phone" in Tokyo and Helsinki in 2004.

The workshop was held in May 22 in Seoul, with 6 university students (1 male, 5 female). Participants were divided into 2 groups and each groups was given 10 minutes to plan and rehearse a short skit that shows a typical mobile landscape of Seoul. Finally, we have 4 short skits performed, each of which plotted out into scenes of idling during lectures, calling to ex-girl friend, a long-distance birthday party, and one typical day of a university student.

Those performances reveal that Korean youngsters get used to command and manage their intimate relationships, using mobile phones in mundane communication. For future work, we would like to add a cross-cultural analysis in comparison with the results of workshops in other regions, expecting to elaborate the notion of "cultural distance" or "intimacy" as the cultural aspects of mobile media in modern society.

MoDeは、3月21日に開催されたMELL EXPO 2009にて「禁じられた遊び」というディスカッション・セッションを開きました。水越伸、岡田朋之、金ヨニ、などMoDeプロジェクトのメンバーらが登壇し、子どもに対するケータイ禁止の動きを含め、日本のモバイル社会に関わる諸課題について討論を行いました。

The MoDe held a discussion session titled "Forbidden games" in the MELL EXPO 2009 in March 21, 2009. Mizukoshi Shin, Okada Tomoyuki and Yonnie Kim, members of the MoDe, were on the panel and led a discussion mentioning the current discourse concerning mobile phone and teenagers in Japan.

The MoDe participates a collaborative research project in cooperation with KDDI Research institute. The research project has launched aiming exploring the socio-cultural possibility of mobile media in the future. A couple of other labs in the Interfaculty Initiative in Information Studies also participate as a research partners of the project.

The Mode will design research schemes from a pespective of socio-media studies, focusing upon mobile media practices and literacy. Its aim is to position mobile media culture as the bourgeoning research area of media studies, as well as to reflect on its underlying frameworks in terms of the media literacy.

In March 2007, we will make a study trip to Denmark and England in conjunction with "media exprimo."

On March 12-13, we will make a presentation and have an interactive discussion at the Department of Media Cognition and Communication, the University of Copenhagen. On March 15-16, we will also have an opportunity for the same kind of presentation and discussion at the Department of Civil Engineering, Aalborg University.
